Trying new things, even as you age, can lead to a more fulfilling life. If you are not growing, you are stagnant. And stagnation can lead to feelings of unhappiness with yourself and your life path. So rather than staying stuck, it is important to expand your horizons  and try new things, even if they scare you! Expanding your horizons can lead to new hobbies and jobs, self discovery, and overall better physical and metal health.

You may be thinking, but I am too old/tired/busy/satisfied/happy/etc. to expand my horizons! While expanding your horizons can mean doing wildly different, exciting, and grandiose adventures and activities, it doesn’t have to. You can explore trying the smallest and most minute shifts in your routine or daily life. Whether your changes are small or large, expanding your horizons can be a pathway to self discovery and empowerment. This can lead to you discovering your passions, finding a career or life path that suits you best, or figuring out how you fit best into this world, at any stage in life.

There are SO many different ways to expand your horizons. But here are a few ways that are guaranteed to change your perspective:

Reading is the quickest way to travel. You can “go” anywhere depending on what kind of books you are reading. Try reading a book that is unfamiliar to you, or outside of your usual type. Explore new genres or read that book that’s been on your shelf for years. Having both fiction and nonfiction books, as well as history, cultural, and even cookbook can help you to learn something new.

Volunteer

Volunteering is a great way to challenge yourself to be the person you think you are in this world. Giving back to those who need it, whether it be people, animals, or the environment is essential to expanding your worldview. Meeting people who are different than you is a great way to bridge the gap and realize that we are all more similar than we are different. Also, you may learn a new skill and meet some new friends in the process!

Do Something Alone

Many of us rely on friends, family, and coworkers throughout the day to accompany us for a variety of tasks and activities throughout the day. But when was the last time you did something alone? When we are truly alone we tend to discover things about ourselves we don’t see when we are constantly distracted and engaged with others. Take yourself out to dinner and a movie, go to the museum opening you’ve been waiting for your friends’ schedules to open up. Traveling solo, even if its just to the next town over, can help get you out of your comfort zone.

Learn Something New

We tend to stop learning new things as we age. But the more you learn, the more engaged you are with yourself and the world around you. Learning a new language, tactical skill, or artistic hobby isn’t just fun, but it helps your brain to stay sharp. Figure out something you’ve always wanted to learn and just go for it!
