J is for Joy: Finding it in the Little Things in Life

It is no secret that everyone has had a challenging past year. And while the end seems near, it is still important to find joy in the little things as we navigate getting back to normal.
Maybe you have been applying this thought to your life since you were young or for the past year. But it is crucial now more than ever to keep or create that mindset for yourself. Being grateful for the things you have may result in having a happier disposition. And genuinely appreciating the little things can help you feel better when the world around you seems heavier than normal.
Taking time to stop and smell the roses can help you appreciate the things you have rather than the things you don’t.
Here are a few simple suggestions to help get you started:
Make yourself a special meal or drink.
It can be healthy and elaborate or simple and decadent. Whichever one you will appreciate more, just go for it. Savor each bite and enjoy the fact that you have access to delicious ingredients.
Take a walk outside.
Go for a special sunset or sunrise walk. Or maybe, a sunny and breezy afternoon walk. Don’t listen to music or a podcast, but instead soak up the scenery and the sounds of nature. Appreciate the time you have carved out of your day to enjoy something small but important.
Reach out to family and friends.
We are social creatures, and the past year has been isolating for most. Even if it is difficult to see certain friends and family members, use the technology we take for granted every day to your advantage! Have a video chat, or send a funny picture of what you’ve been up to lately.
Take some time for yourself.
Whatever it may be. A bubble bath, a road trip to your favorite vacation spot, or treating yourself to some fancy take-out. Find some joy in caring for yourself and doing something special just for you.
Joy can be one of those things we often overlook if there is not something big happening. But when you find joy in the little things, it can help you remember what is important in life. It can help you not forget that even when something is troubling you, everything is not all bad. Keep your eyes open, and you may be surprised at all of the places you will be finding joy.
