D is for Don’t Let Your Divorce Negatively Define You

“You must give up the life you planned in order to have the life that is waiting for you.” ― Joseph Campbell
Dealing with divorce is a harsh reality. After all no one gets married expecting divorce in their future. Yet it happens to a large number of married couples. Divorce happens to good people. It doesn’t have to be toxic and it most certainly does not define who you are as a person. Sometimes, ending a marriage becomes vital for positive growth in the future.
Divorce will naturally expose many mixed emotions, but it does not have to encompass bad behavior by either party. Embrace all your feelings including fear, anger, anxiety, sadness, etc. and allow them to move through you so that you may heal. Defining how this process plays out in your life puts you in the driver’s seat. You can choose to go through this time with dignity and kindness in your heart, helping you to retain your self-respect.
Choosing to move through your divorce with decorum and courage will define the outcome of its success and your self-worth. Staying calm in the face of difficult emotions and negotiations will allow you to walk away knowing you kept your authentic self allowing you to part with few regrets.
